The Impact of the Industrial Revolution on the Life and Health of the British People :: Free Essays
The Impact of the Industrial Revolution on the Life and Health of the British People Trade and industry changed dramatically during the Victorian period. The invention of new machines and the growth of factories affected the working lives of many people. The invention of steam power meant that many jobs could now be done by machines and steam powered machines meant that more goods could be made and much faster than before, when they were made by hand. When manufacturers realised this, they put their machines into huge factories so that all the work could be done in one place. Coal was needed to help make steam to power the machines. Many Victorian factories were built near coalmines to make it easier to get the coal to the factory. The coal mining industry grew. Many workers were needed to keep the new machines running in the factories and more workers were needed to work in the coalmines. Huge industrial towns grew around the factories as people moved to factory areas to look for work. In 1800, 75000 people lived in Manchester. By 1850, more than 300 000 people lived there. This made more goods for sale at home and abroad. The revolution had many impacts on Victorian life and many people benefited from industrialization but many people did not. For most people the Industrial Revolution was a good thing. Farm workers now had machines to help them and owners of the new factories and mills were making lots of money from the goods, made in their factories, being exported and sold. New inventions such as the telegraph and the typewriter created different kinds of jobs. However, for many people, life was made much more difficult. Factory workers had no rights and had to work long hours in dreadful conditions for a very low pay. The new machines were often not very safe and the workers' lives were at risk when they were running them. Factory owners exploited their workers, especially women and children. But people were desperate for work and those without jobs were not

Shark Tank Paper
Shark Tank is an American reality show produced by Mark Burnett. The show is about aspiring entrepreneurs bringing their business plan up in front of a panel of potential investors to see if they can sell their product to them and get the total investment amount needed. Today the first entrepreneur was Sarah Schulz the founder of Schulzies bread pudding. She was seeking an investment of $160,000 for a twenty percent equity stake in Shulzies. All the investors were able to try a variety of bread pudding which turned out to be a delicious surprise. The only thing lacking in Sarah's business was a stable yet sturdy business plan. The investors definitely wanted to help her, but the risk was far too high. As we all know, to have a successful business you have to have a successful business plan or you will crumble. The second entrepreneur was James Ambler who is the owner of Paparazzi Proposals. They go around capturing the perfect moment of a marriage proposal. He was seeking a $250,000 i nvestment for twenty percent equity in his company. He explained to the panel that he wants to expand his business to cities other than Just New York. The investors gave him helpful advice on how to go about the expansion nd all recommended to first saturate his current market, New York City, and then go on to other destinations. Three of the ââ¬Å"sharksâ⬠simply told him they dont see the need for that amount of money because the company isn't worth that much. Laurie was very interested but was wanting a bigger piece of the pie, because she felt like she could show him how to move the business into extreme success. Out of the last three investors, they all decided to give him a portion of what he was asking with thirty three percent of the business.Lori and Kevin decided to partner giving him 50,000 for thirty three percent and loaning the rest when he needed it. Robert started off on the fence and gave him the offer of $100,000 with thirty three percent and also loaning the rest when he needed it. He made an offer asking Robert to let Lori partner and Robert immediately was out. So he was left with the only offer standing and that was with Kevin and Lori. He told them if they would go down to thirty percent they would have a deal. The partners agreed and James left the room with investors for his company. The next entrepreneurs who entered in front of the panel had a new way to communicate with a child before it is even born. Curtis and Matt are the founders of Belly Buds who are seeking an investment of $500,000 in exchange for twelve and a half percent of their company. Basically their product makes playing music to the baby much easier by using a baby bump sound system that adheres to the woman's stomach. This allows her to play music and/or voices through her stomach to the baby in the womb anytime, anywhere. The investors first wanted to know if the product was patented. The partners said they have had a patent pending for three years, and Lori went on to say that they were probably not going to get it then. Mark aid that he had a similar product when his children were in the womb it Just didn't adhere to the stomach, which is probably why the patent is pending. Most of the investors described how the price they are asking, based on their sales, was Just too high of an amount for them to risk investing. The other two said that the product Just wasnt unique enough an they didn't see the potential to make money. The final entrepreneur that entered was a man from California with an innovative new cosmetic line. Abe Geary the founder of Pet Paint, colored hairspray for your dog, was seeking a $200,000 investment for twenty percent of his company. The product is veterinary tested, easy to use, easy to wash off, and will make your dog one ofa kind. One investor commented that the product doesn't have a good price, ten dollars a can isn't something most households are willing to spend to spray paint their dog.Kevin said that if he was able to make a paint that no one else could make he would consider the offer but this product is one that anyone can come up with and distribute, so he was out. Lori was concerned with the amount of inventory and also said she was out. Mark was more concerned with the fact that Abe didn't ecognize the opportunity that online sales could bring him, so because of his lack of seeing potential ways to increase his business Mark also didn't invest. With four sharks now out, Robert was Abe's last chance to cut a deal and luckily he was on the fence. While trying to decide Barb comes swooping in offering him $200,000 for sixty percent of his business. His response shocked many when he said that he didn't want to work with someone who was Just interested in equity and declined the offer. It closed with Abe stating that he will be taking the advice of the sharks and Pet Paint will soon be online.

Isolation and Loneliness in Of Mice and Men Essay
In the novel Of Mice and Men the theme of loneliness and isolation can hardly be ignored as there are elements of them in key moments in the story. Isolation and loneliness plays a huge role in the story and some of the points that make this book a very gripping read, they also put things across that most of us would not have imagined in the first place. George and Lennie play the biggest part to the themes of loneliness and isolation. When they first arrive at the ranch everybody is very surprised to see two itinerant workers travelling around together. The night before George and Lennie come to the ranch they are sitting by the brush they say to each other ââ¬ËGuys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the worldâ⬠¦ They donââ¬â¢t belong no placeâ⬠¦But not us!â⬠¦ Because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you.ââ¬â¢ George and Lennieââ¬â¢s dream of themselves owning a ranch together and having a house with two separate bedrooms for each other, this in the day the book was written was very strange because people keep themselves to themselves and travel on their own they would do almost anything to share a room with somebody just for the company. But George and Lennie arenââ¬â¢t lonely and they want their own space away from other people. All of the other workers are not afraid to tell George and Lennie that they find it strange that two workers are travelling together and Lennie can only speak when George lets him. The ranch owner tells George that he will keep an eye on them because George may be trying to take something from George, for example his money. This is a perfect example of how people thought about workers travelling together. A good point about having friends on the ranch is if you get in a fight you have someone to stick up for you. An example of this is when Curley starts to hit Lennie he does nothing until George tells him that he can hit back and so he does and Curley gets what he probably deserves. The friendship that George and Lennie has is very important especially to Lennie because most other people would not be able to put up with him being a pest and causing them to loose their previous job in weed due to Lennie doing something stupid. If it was not for these two friends looking out for each other Lennie would probably been killed a lot earlier on in the story and not by George. Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is also a great example of loneliness and isolation on the ranch. Steinbeck does not give her a name. That makes her feel unimportant and she is not wanted, even though she plays a big part in the novel about the themes of dreams and in a way stops Lennie and George from getting their own dream of their own ranch. She is the only woman on a ranch full of men. This means that there is an immediate sense of loneliness because if any of the workers are caught flirting with her there will be trouble because Curleyââ¬â¢s dad is the ranch owner and he can get the workers sacked if his son tells him to, so Curleyââ¬â¢s wife has to stay in her house all day and the only person she can really talk to is Curley. Towards the end of the novel when Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is talking to Lennie in the barn it is the first time in the whole novel when she actually has a full conversation with anybody. She opens up to Lennie and tells him things that she has never told anyone else before, probably because she has nobody else to talk to. She really ââ¬Ëlets her hair downââ¬â¢ and tells him all sorts of things like she tells him that she does not like to only have to talk to Candy because she does not like him and that he is not a nice person. The only reason why she married him was so that she can escape her ââ¬Ëprevious lifeââ¬â¢ at home. She also says ââ¬ËThink I donââ¬â¢t like to talk to somebody everââ¬â¢ once in a while? Think I like to stick in that house alla time.ââ¬â¢ On the ranch Candy is another perfect example of loneliness and isolation. Because he is old and disabled the other workers have a different attitude to him. His equivalent to a friend on the ranch was hi old dog. Because his dog was old and no longer useful so they kill it. Candy hopes they shoot him when he gets unable to do any work. At the very end of the novel when Lennie has killed Curleyââ¬â¢s wife and Curley is hunting him down. George is the one to kill Lennie because they were friends and he wanted no body else to shoot him. This shows friendship even when Lennie has done something very bad up until his last moment George can still find it in his heart to be kind to Lennie.

Free Essays on Choices Are Never Easy
Choices are never easy- men face multitudes of them in their lifetime. Some decisions to these choices are clear while others are more difficult. The poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost is a first person narrative tale of a monumental moment in the speakerââ¬â¢s life. The narrator is faced between the choice of a moment and a lifetime. Walking down a rural road the narrator encounters a point on his travel that diverges into two separate similar paths. Frost presents the idea of man facing the difficult unalterable decision of a moment and a lifetime. This idea in Frostââ¬â¢s poem is embodied in the fork in the road, the decision between the two paths, and the speakerââ¬â¢s decision to select the road less traveled. Manââ¬â¢s life can be metaphorically related to a physical journey filled with many twists and turns. Throughout this journey there are instants where choices between alternate paths have to be made. The route a man decides to take is not always an easy one to determine. The fork in the road represents the speakerââ¬â¢s encounter of having to choose from two paths, a direction that will affect him the rest of his life. Frost presents to the reader a moment in anyoneââ¬â¢s life where a problematic choice has to be made. There are an abundance of options in life man faces; Frost symbolizes this into the diverging of the two paths in his poem. The decision of which path to choose from can be hard to accept, just as the revelation of the choices. The two paths represent the options man has to choose from. Faced with these decisions, man has to weigh his options carefully to make an optimal choice. At the split in the road, the speaker looks far down both paths to see what each of the paths will bring. Overview of the Rajput People of India
Overview of the Rajput People of India A Rajput is a member of northern Indias Hindu warrior caste. They live mainly in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. The word Rajput is a contracted form of raja, or monarch, and Putra, meaning son. According to legend, only the first son of a king could inherit the kingdom, so the later sons became military leaders. From these younger sons was born the Rajput warrior caste. The term Rajaputra was first mentioned around 300 B.C., in the Bhagvat Purana. The name gradually evolved to its current shortened form. Origins of the Rajputs The Rajputs were not a separately identified group until the 6th century AD. At that time, the Gupta empire broke up and there were repeated conflicts with the Hephthalites, the White Huns. They may have been absorbed into the existing society, including leaders into the Kshatriya rank. Others from the local tribes also ranked as Rajput. The Rajputs claim descent from three basic lineages or vanshas. Suryavanshi, the Solar Dynasty, descended from Surya, the Hindu Sun-god.Chadravanshi, the Lunar Dynasty descended from Chandra, the Hindu Moon-god. They include major sub-branches of Yaduvanshi (Lord Krisha was born into this branch) and Puruvanshi.Agnivanshi, the Fire Dynasty descended from Agni, the Hindu god of fire. This lineage has four clans: Chauhans, Paramara, Solanki, and Pratiharas. These all are divided into clans who claim direct patrilineal descent from a common male ancestor. These are then divided into sub-clans, shakhas, that have their own genealogical creed, which governs the laws of intermarriage. History of the Rajputs Rajputs ruled many small kingdoms in North India from the beginning of the 7th century. They were an obstacle to the Muslim conquest in North India. While they opposed invasion by the Muslims, they also battled among each other and were loyal to their clan rather than uniting. When the Mughal empire was established, some Rajput rulers were allies and also married their daughters to the emperors for political favor. The Rajputs revolted against the Mughal empire and led to its downfall in the 1680s. In the late 18th century, Rajput rulers formed an alliance with the East India Company. By the time of British influence, Rajputs ruled most of the princely states in Rajasthan and Saurashtra. Rajput soldiers were valued by the British. Purbiya soldiers from the eastern Ganga plains had long been mercenaries for Rajput rulers. The British gave more self-rule to the Rajput princes than to other areas of India. Upon independence from Britain in 1947, the princely states voted for whether to join India, Pakistan or remain independent. Twenty-two princely states joined India as the state of Rajasthan. Rajputs are now a Forward Caste in India, meaning they do not get any preferential treatment under the system of positive discrimination. Culture and Religion of Rajputs While many Rajputs are Hindu, others are Muslim or Sikh. Rajput rulers exhibited religious toleration to a greater or lesser extent. Rajputs generally secluded their women and were seen in older times to practice female infanticide and sati (widow immolation). They are usually not vegetarians and eat pork, as well as drinking alcohol.
